Bird Island  / Platform

The Bird Island Wall is a dive which bottoms out around 100 feet. The wall goes down in levels with a ledge at approximately every 15 feet. This island itself is a bird sanctuary and is particularly interesting during the month of June when the Blue Herons return from the south and nest here to hatch their young. The Platform is a dive area originally set up as a training site for part of the advanced diver programs. With as max. depth of about 50 feet, it is the numerous boats, toilets, tire reef filled with fish, and town water intake line that make this such an interesting dive. Boat leaves from Segwun Park Dock, Gravenhurst .

Waome

Ojibwa Indian word meaning Water Lily. Originally named the Mink, the Waome now lies underneath the serine waters of Lake Muskoka. On the morning of October 6, 1934, en route from Port Carling to Beaumaris, a freak storm caught her broadside and left her on the bottom of the lake just west of Keewaydin Island. In about 70 feet of water, this 78’ steel hulled wooden steamer is sitting upright and is still almost fully intact.

Sitting upright and intact in dark, tea-colored water, the vessel’s original white paint still clings to her wood in places. The subtle glow of the bit of light that makes it to this depth reflects eerily off the Waome’s 78′ hull. Penetration of this wreck is possible; from the upper deck past the wheelhouse, the diver can descend down the stairway to the lower deck or head towards the fantail. The cargo doors on the second deck are open on both sides allowing divers to swim through from one side to the other. There are many other areas to be explored on this vessel. We recommend minimum Advanced Certification for this dive. Maximum depth of this dive is 70 ft.

Come and board our custom built 32’ charter boat. Specially designed to accommodate scuba divers, the pontoon boat holds 10 people comfortably. The entire charter lasts from 2 to 3 hours. Boarding takes place 15 minutes before departure at the dock in Milford Bay. Experienced divers may penetrate this wreck. Lights and a wet or dry suit are a necessity. Visibility is from 10 – 15 feet.

Next to the dock is a beautiful parkette, with washrooms, picnic tables, and a sandy beach. Bringing a picnic lunch makes for a full day of fun and excitement for divers and non-divers alike.

Dates and times are booked on a first come basis, therefore those who book the earliest will get the best choice.

Lake Joseph — The Wall & The Grotto

Because our boat has such a long trip to get to these sights, for dates and times, please contact the store as we are only doing a couple of these charters each year.

These spectacular dives are a must do!

Dive 1:

The Wall is a spectacular dive with one end of it bottoming out at 120′ (for the advanced recreational divers) and the other end extending to a depth of 285′ (for the mixed gas divers). Since the discovery of this dive in 1995 there have been many advanced and technical divers enjoying its splendor and challenge.

The entry point for the recreational divers is a ‘v’ cut in the wall on the east side of the lake. When divers enter at this point the maximum depth is 120′. As you follow the wall there are many overhangs and as you look up there is a river of bubbles running to the surface.

The entry point for the trimix or technical divers is at our preset float that takes you directly to 180 feet, at which point, divers then follow the wall to their choice of depth or the maximum 285′.

Dive 2:

The Grotto is a cavern type dive with some swim throughs, through and around large glacial boulders and rocks. The maximum depth is 55 feet.

Come and board our custom built 32′ charter boat. Specially designed to accommodate scuba divers, the pontoon boat holds 10 people comfortably. The entire charter lasts approximately 3½ hours. Boarding takes place 15 minutes before departure at the dock at the end of “Gordon Point Road”. Lights and a wet or dry suit are a necessity for both dives. Visibility is from 30 – 50 feet.

Dates and times are booked on a first come basis, therefore those who book the earliest will get the best choice.

Cover story

As part of our Great Canadian Family Scuba Series over the last year we have dived in many incredible locations across Canada. Using my own eager sons as case examples, Josh (17yrs) and Jonah (15yrs), we highlighted the successes and challenges associated with the Open Water Certification process. Our goal was to dispel some of the myths associated with scuba diving in Canada, including that scuba diving is only limited to fit athletes, that only adults can do it successfully and that Canadian waters are just too cold to enjoy. So far we have loved being a part of this series because of the exceptional diving opportunities in great locations, some of which have surprised us. One area we loved this summer was Muskoka Ontario. After all, with all it’s 1600 lakes, we assumed that the Muskoka region would be festooned with diving tour operators. However there is only one: Scuba Shack! Based in Gravenhurst Ontario, Scuba Shack is Muskoka’s only recreational and technical diving facility and is backed by over 32 Years in the diving Industry servicing all of central Ontario.
